Knife Care
- Do NOT place your knife in the dishwasher. To clean your knife, always hand wash, towel dry and store safely outside the sheath when it’s not in use
- Do NOT store your knife in a damp environment
- To prevent rust it is advised to use a mineral oil and reapply every few weeks for optimal longevity
- Because your knife is a piece of functional art, your handle may start to dry out after multiple uses. If this happens, use a small amount of care oil or care wax to get the shine back
- Avoid prolonged exposure to sun and salt air
- Use an appropriate cutting board - don't use glass, stone, or ceramic cutting boards. Don't use your granite countertop. Appropriate cutting boards are made from wood, bamboo, silicone, or plastic. These materials will provide a solid surface to do your cutting without damaging the fine slicing-edge of your knife
- Do NOT leave your knife with food residues or acidic juices. This will minimize stains and corrosion
- Do NOT store your knife in its sheath for prolonged periods
- A common mistake is to oil the knife using olive oil which may go rancid so we recommend a food safe mineral oil
Wash by hand right after use and dry. A bit of detergent and hot water (do not submerge the handle), and dry immediately and apply a light coating of oil to help prevent corrosion. Avoid using an abrasive sponge on your knife, most of them will leave micro scratches on the surface of your blade and prematurely erode the finish on your handle.
StoringIt is advised to store your knives on a knife holder or in a knife block. Storing knives separately decreases the event of damage from other kitchenware. Store knives properly and away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Handle CareWith wood handles it becomes more important to hand wash and dry and avoid the dishwasher. Once a month or so, use a little bee's wax or wood polish to restore the finish of your wood, or a small amount of mineral oil as a temporary fix but it will need to be applied more often than wax.
Damascus Knives
Damascus steel is mostly made from forge welded layers of 15N20 steel and 1075 steel. The 15N20 is a nickel steel and is what forms the highlights of the pattern, whilst the 1075 is a carbon steel and turns black when etched.
To help maintain your Damascus steel knife, there are only a few things you need to do;
- Rinse clean under running water and wipe dry with a clean cloth
- Lightly oil using food safe mineral oil
- Store in a dry place
The Damascus pattern will fade with use - this is normal and easy to rectify. Hot black instant coffee is a mild etch-ant that we use as the final stage of our Damascus etching process. It is an element of our process that contributes to the blackness of the pattern.
Here’s how to refresh your own blades:
- Brew a batch of black instant coffee to immerse the blade in.
- Wash the blade, then thoroughly wipe it down with methylated spirits to remove oils and contaminants.
- Immerse the blade in the instant coffee. Be sure to use hot coffee as heat increases the rate of reaction. DO NOT immerse the handle in the coffee or any liquid.
- Expect the process to take anywhere between 15 minutes to and an hour. Check the blade every 15 minutes by removing it from the coffee and allowing the coffee to drip off. Do not touch or wipe down the blade at any point.
- When the desired results have been achieved, remove the blade from the coffee then wash as normal before oiling and storing.
Alternatively, we offer Damascus refreshing as one of our services. Please email info@bloodandsteel.com.au for more information
Wood Utensils Care
- Clean the wood regularly with a damp cloth or a mild detergent. Be sure to avoid over watering the wood
- Remove stains and dirt as soon as possible to prevent them from penetrating the wood
- Dry the wood thoroughly after cleaning to avoid mould growth
- Use a suitable care product to protect and care for the wood. Oiling or waxing can protect the wood from moisture and dirt while making it more supple and attractive. We recommend using a bee's wax or mineral oil
- Avoid using chemicals like chlorine or acids that can damage the wood
- Avoid too much sunlight and moisture on the wood to avoid discolouration and expansion
- Note: Wooden items can absorb odours from strong flavours like garlic or oil and could transfer the odours and flavours to other foods
- If your wooden utensils develop spotted stains or roughness, these can be rubbed away with a piece of fine sandpaper. Oil the surface afterward with mineral oil or a beeswax
It is important to ensure that the wood is always dry and clean. Regular care and maintenance can help the wood last longer and look more attractive. Wooden utensils are also among the best tools to be used on nonstick cookware, as they won't scratch the coating as much as metal utensils might.
Copper/Brass Care
NOTE: Please DO NOT wear our copper / brass jewellery if you have allergies / allergic reactions to these metals
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, resembling gold in colour. This material will tarnish and patina over time turning a brownish aged colour. Note, the copper content of this metal can oxidise in combination with skin oils, creating a greenish layer of copper carbonate on skin. This occurs most often with tight rings worn in hot weather, because of the lack of air circulation between your finger and the ring.
Taking good care of your brass and copper jewellery will keep it shinier, longer. To clean we recommend a little bit of dish soap with a soft toothbrush or sponge. Wash carefully, then rinse under water and dry with a soft cloth.
Avoid wearing your jewellery in the pool as the chemicals will oxidise and change the appearance of your jewellery.
Store your jewellery in a dry place as moisture leads to tarnishing.
